Yuan Longping was born on September 7, 1930, in Beijing, China. He spent his childhood in a rural area of Hunan province where his father was a teacher. In 1953, Yuan graduated from Southwest Agricultural College in Chongqing, China, and then worked as a teacher and researcher at Hunan Agricultural College. In 1957, he went to study plant genetics in the United States at the University of California, where he earned a Ph.D. in agriculture in 1960.Work and Contributions
After returning to China in 1964, Yuan started to work on hybrid rice breeding, aiming to increase rice yield and solve China’s food shortage problem. He and his team worked tirelessly for years to develop a hybrid rice strain that had higher yield potentials than traditional rice varieties. In 1973, Yuan succeeded in developing the first hybrid rice strain that had a yield of over 12,000 kg per hectare, which was a significant breakthrough in agriculture.
